Simple Conference mode vs Geographical Conference mode
With the traditional Conference Mode, each TPO place can be configured to specify how speech path is distributed when multiple participants are connected to the same call established on the line.
The configuration allows choosing between two options:
•All – All participants can hear the voice of other participants;
Trader3 can hear the distant end as well as all of his trader colleagues.
•Geographic Group – The distant end can hear the voice of all traders; traders cannot hear the voices of those in the call that are close enough to be heard directly;
Trader3 does not hear his trader colleagues in the call if they are close enough to be heard directly.
•Master Only – The distant end can hear the voice of all traders; traders can only hear the voice of the distant end, regardless of where the other traders are located;
Trader3 will only ever hear the distant end, even if his trader colleagues are in a different geographic group.
Geographic mode
The second option allows a trader not to be disturbed by the voice of a colleague in the call - as he already hears his voice because he is sitting next to him. Having the other trader's voice replicated in his handset (with a slight delay) is really disturbing.
The Geographical Conference Mode gives a precise control over the conference, by taking into account the geographical location of each trader's turret and defining a minimal distance to have with a neighbor in order to hear him.
The traders connected on turrets that are not in a Geographic Group will hear all parties (local and distant), regardless of their geographical location.
In our previous example, if traders are sitting next to each others (positions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 respectively), then, by setting the minimum distance to 2, traders will not hear their closest neighbors, as show in the diagram below:
Trader3 only hears Trader1 and Trader5, and not Trader2 nor Trader4.
The idea is thus to represent the physical configuration of the trading floor and use this representation to determine who hears who.
Practically, the geographical configuration is 2-dimensional, but the key concept is the same. See the Usage section.
